Ayurvedic Treatment for Kidney Stones: In Ayurveda, kidney stones are referred to as Ashmari. The term “Ashmari” breaks down into “Ashm,” meaning stone, and “Ari,” meaning enemy. Although renal stones have become a common condition in modern times, Ayurveda has long recognized and addressed this issue. The ancient texts of Ayurveda provide detailed descriptions of the symptoms, types, causes, and treatments for kidney stones.

Essentially, kidney stones are deposits of salts and minerals, and approximately 1 in 10 people worldwide experience this condition.

This blog will explore Ayurvedic approaches to treating kidney stones (Ayurvedic Treatment for Kidney Stones), or Ashmari, and introduce safe and effective Ayurvedic remedies that can help avoid surgery while minimizing the risk of recurrence.

Common Symptoms of Kidney Stones

Kidney stones, or renal calculi, can present a variety of symptoms. The most common signs include:

  • Sharp pain in the abdomen, often radiating from the lower back to the groin (loin to groin pain)
  • Burning sensation during urination
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

Common Causes of Kidney Stones

Kidney stones, also known as renal calculi, are often classified as a lifestyle-related disorder, with their recurrence being more common in men than in women. The age group most affected by kidney stones typically ranges from 20 to 40 years.

Some of the leading causes of kidney stones include:

  • High salt intake in the diet
  • Excessive consumption of red meat
  • Overuse of multivitamin supplements
  • Dehydration
  • Exposure to hot and humid climates

Types of Kidney Stones

Kidney stones are classified based on their composition. The most common types are:

  • Calcium Oxalate stones, which make up about 80% of cases worldwide
  • Struvite stones
  • Uric Acid stones
  • Cystine stones

According to Ayurvedic texts, Acharya Sushruta described renal stones, known as Ashmari, as “darun,” meaning a dangerous or life-threatening condition. Proper diagnosis and treatment are essential to managing and preventing the recurrence of kidney stones.

How Are Kidney Stones (Ashmari) Diagnosed in Ayurveda?

In Ayurveda, kidney stones, known as Ashmari, are categorized into four distinct types based on the doshas (bodily energies) and the nature of the stones:

  • Vataj Ashmari – This type is similar to calcium oxalate stones and is associated with the Vata dosha. These stones are typically hard and rough in texture.
  • Pittaj Ashmari – Resembling uric acid stones, this form is linked to an imbalance in the Pitta dosha. These stones are often smaller, yellowish, and tend to cause burning sensations.
  • Kaphaj Ashmari – Corresponding to oxalate or phosphate stones, this type is associated with the Kapha dosha. These stones are usually smooth, heavy, and slower to form.
  • Shukraj Ashmari – Unique to Ayurveda, this type refers to the formation of stones in the seminal vesicles, often caused by the suppression of sexual urges (Shukra vega).

About the Three Common Types of Kidney Stones (Ashmari) in Ayurveda

Let’s explore the three primary types of kidney stones, or “Ashmari,” as categorized in Ayurveda:

Vataj Ashmari (Calcium Oxalate Stones)

Vataj Ashmari is blackish, hard, and irregular in shape, resembling the spiked Kadamb flower. Common symptoms include severe pain in the abdomen and anal region, a burning sensation in the penis, and difficulty passing gas, urine, and stool.

Pittaj Ashmari (Uric Acid Stones)

Pittaj Ashmari resembles a Bhallataka (marking nut) and is linked to a Pitta dosha imbalance. Typical symptoms include burning urination and yellowish urine.

Kaphaj Ashmari (Oxalate/Phosphate Stones)

Kaphaj Ashmari is white, slimy, and larger in size. Symptoms often involve pain in the lower abdomen or bladder (Basti) region.

If you experience any of these symptoms, you may be suffering from kidney stones. It’s essential to consult an Ayurvedic doctor or Panchakarma Treatment in Delhi for early diagnosis and treatment to avoid the risk of surgical intervention.
